The World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2011, a dream realized!

For one week, the City of Lausanne pulsated to the rhythm of Gymnastics for All, thanks to the gymnasts who came from all over the world to share their passion.

]]>The whole population of Lausanne and surrounding areas discovered a universe rich in colour and emotion, made up of sharing, meeting and above all, magic. Through this event, Lausanne became the theatre for 19,000 people, who took part in performances right across town during each day, and thrilling the spectators. Thank you for coming, for your commitment and your enthusiasm!

From the Pontaise Olympic Stadium, to the Malley Sports Centre, taking in Beaulieu Lausanne, the Bellerive Village and the various city stages, colour spread through the streets, shops, restaurants and buses in the Lausanne area. The made up faces with their beaming smiles encouraged interaction and warmth all over the city!

All this was also thanks to YOU! You did your bit close by or at a distance, making sure that this huge boat docked safely in the harbour on 10 July at 16.00 precisely. You enabled it to remain safely anchored at the quayside for the whole week, and then you let it sail away with the participants, once the event came to an end. The World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2011 was not the story of one or two people, but of thousands who were ready to get behind it, unstintingly, right through to the final objective, ensuring that the event was memorable. And you can be proud of your achievement, because it certainly was!

We should like to say to you a big “THANK YOU!” Thank you for being there and for making the event so beautiful!

The Organizing Committee World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2011 would also like to wish those responsible for Helsinki 2015 all the courage needed to set up the next edition of this extraordinary event, and we hope they will also enjoy all the magic it will generate!

Exceptional! Fantastic! Those are the sorts of words coming out of the mouths of the thousands of participants for whom the vintage 2011 will remain an unforgettable memory….

]]>With the Closing Ceremony, the curtain fell on the 14th edition of the World Gymnaestrada. It was a week during which the gymnastics presentations succeeded one another at the speed of light, always leaving room for interaction on a human level. Fifty-five delegations coming from the four corners of the planet offered their talent, warmth, and colorful fireworks to the public of Lausanne, the region, and the world. Once again, there was magic! MEET THE MAGIC echoed at the diverse WG venues, in the city, at Beaulieu Lausanne, at the Sports Center Malley and at the Olympic Stadium la Pontaise. Cathy and Jim drew crowds everywhere they went, and were particularly popular with the numerous children who viewed them with awe.

One thing is certain: nothing would have been possible without the will and the skills of our almost 5,000 volunteers. We’ll never be able to thank you enough! Day after day you served, accompanied, and worked to help make the 19,100 gymnasts feel at home. Bravo everyone, THANK YOU, and good-bye! Here’s to the 15th World Gymnaestrada in Helsinki…

]]>The World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2011 is ending after a week of festivities, dazzling performances, and entertainment in the streets of the capital of the canton of Vaud. The curtain will close for the next four years, to open again in Helsinki in 2015. Full of emotion, the Organizing Committee of the WG-2011 passed the flame to the next organizers and wished them all the best in preparing this extraordinary event. Gymnasts from all over the world will continue to dream of the World Gymnaestrada, and we all look forward to the next rendezvous in Finland!

Closing Ceremony

The final Clap of the World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2001given during this ceremony will see several countries who participated in this 14th edition joining in the festivities.

]]>The public will be able to discover the productions of Japan, Czech Republic, Holland, Australia, South Africa, Germany, Denmark, the Pan-American Countries, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

The organizers of the next World Gymnaestrada, taking place in Helsinki in 2015 will also partake in the Closing Ceremony. It will be an emotional moment as Switzerland passes the torch to Finland and officially closes this World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2011.

The FIG Gala in Lausanne

The Magic made the rendezvous last night in the Malley Sports Centre for two presentations of the FIG Gala.

]]>Gymnasts from 17 countries participated in a stunning show which bewitched the public of 5,000. Apparatus and floor acrobatics – embellished by costumes which retained the attention of the public through their originality – the FIG Gala 2011 proved dramatically the beauty of “Gymnastics for All”.

The Beauty in Sports Lives On

This Gymnaestrada is an exceptional success on all levels, sporting, emotional and organization. Proof is in the smile on the face of everyone who has in one way or the other participated in the Gymnaestrada.

]]>Give it your all, be 200% ready when the day comes after training for months if not years, be tense and nervous before the show, have the so very important team spirit. All these qualities are necessary for high level competition. Something is missing in an event such as Gymnaestrada: There are no results! However, would this change anything? Nothing and everything at the same time; the gymnasts came because they love their sport and will give it their all.

Have you already noticed the smile on the face of the athletes during their performances. It doesn’t disappear from beginning to end in spite of the physical effort and shortness of breath. It is very impressive. Veronica, 24 years old, bright eyed member of the Argentine delegation confirms: “We smile to show what pleasure we have dancing and to transmit our joy to the public”.

This proves that in the end you can enjoy sports without results and medals. Imagine a football game without a scoreboard or an America’s Cup without a winner, simply unimaginable!! The World Gymnastrada is a pleasure for the eyes yet a great lesson in life as well.

My opinion has changed after having met the athletes and watched their extraordinary shows full of colours and emotions. The sight of these smiling athletes who have paid the journey out of their pockets, completely changes the view we generally have of sports, which proves “the beauty in sports lives on”.

Bravo to all and may Gymnaestrada continue to raise the interest of the public, the volunteers and the International Gymnastics Federations.

Someone said "amateurs" ?

The seating was packed Tuesday at the strike of noon in Hall 7. The production "Magic Nastic" of the Swiss Group (SUI11) was very anticipated, and the 130 gymnastes did not disappoint.

]]>Quite to the contrary, this group proved that the border between the professional and amateur worlds is negligible to them. Their presentation was breathtaking. "It is the best show I've seen until now", confides a Canadian gymnast.

The show started with approximately 60 Swiss gymnasts dressed in white spread out through the room, a distant voice of plunges the public into a story of good and evil. After several artistic movements, the other gymnasts enter dressed in black. The struggle begins with a breathtaking performance to a furious tempo. Evil steals away the Good with prodigal lifts and magical jumps. But the Kingdom of Good finally wins the struggle with jumps on a mini trampoline, rhythmic gymnastics apparatus, hammers and rings.

The 130 constantly moving gymnasts realize an incredible performance which entails as well décor and costume changes, animating this magical story. The public is on their feet for a standing ovation and an “Ola” takes life in the seating from an emotional public before the impressive presentation by the group Vaudois, AccroGym.

Célia, a 20 year old gymnast gets the last word. “It was incredible! The dances, the costumes, it was really great! ”

Malgré le séisme et les catastrophes qui ont ravagé leur pays, les Japonais tenaient à être présents à Lausanne.

]]>C’est sur des images des catastrophes qui ont ravagé le Japon, au mois de mars, que cette soirée commençait. Et eux-mêmes le disaient : « Aujourd’hui, au Japon, c’est l’enfer mais nous voulons vous dire merci pour votre soutien, votre aide et votre amour avec un spectacle de gymnastique de haut niveau». Cette soirée était donc chargée en émotion.

Tout en harmonie et avec beaucoup d’humour, on se souviendra du French cancan des « International Old Boy », ils nous ont offert un spectacle de toute beauté et avec beaucoup de précision. Et on pouvait voir sur le visage des gymnastes de tous les âges, leur bonheur d’être présent pour nous offrir ce show.

Chaque prestation a été ovationnée par le public qui était debout à la fin de la soirée. Nous aussi voulions les remercier pour ce moment tout en poésie. Et c’est ensemble que gymnaste et spectateur ont crié à Malley : « Waido » « nous n’abandonnerons pas ».
Les japonais nous donnent rendez-vous, à Helsinki, en 2015 !

World record

The attempt to win the worldrecord took finally place yesterday in the WG Bellerive village.

]]>78 gymnasts, including three woman, took up the challenge and performed 790 somersaults in the required space of time. It was a great success. They even have exceeded the requirements for the record and will now enter the Guiness Book.

BRAVO and thank you for a wonderful show and an outstanding athletic performance.
