Lausanne’s public transport network represents one of the densest in Switzerland, if not Europe.
With 25 bus lines, 3 metros and 8 regional railway lines, it covers the whole of the Lausanne region, which is an area of 250,000 inhabitants spread among 11 communes.
Thus, over 72 million travellers are transported each year, thanks mainly to journeys lasting between 5 and 7 minutes, during the rush hours.
The city of Lausanne has finished the construction of a new metro line that is the real backbone of the area’s transport system. This metro provide a perfect connection with the other public transport elements servicing the whole of the canton. It came into service in September 2008 and connect Ouchy and the lakeside, to the top of the city in under 20 minutes.
All the venues chosen for hosting the event (demonstrations, villages, the stadium, accommodation) will be easily accessible both by regular public transport as well as by special transport, put in place specifically for the occasion.
During the World Gymnaestrada
During the whole week, Lausanne public transport will service the stops of the event every 10 minutes until around midnight.
Opening Ceremony
The Pontaise Olympic Stadium regularly welcomes large-scale events. Lausanne public transport is therefore used to and prepared to provide transport for a large number of people at the end of these events. A smooth-running concept will be put into place in order to ensure the transportation of all participants at the end of the Opening Ceremony.
