As gymnasts and sports people we have an inherent responsibility to protect the health of our environment, as we do our own bodies. The WG-2011 has committed to sustainable development and so can you, by making a few simple gestures.
Transport
- Every time you can, go on foot, by bicycle or on public transport.
- When you travel by plane, think about compensating for the CO2 emission: www.myclimate.org
Did you know it?
- A return flight Moscow-Geneva produces 1,027 tons of CO2 per person. This represents only CHF36.- to compensate. This money will be reinvested in various projects aimed at limiting the production of CO2.
- Coming to Lausanne by bus or train from a European capital, such as Berlin for example, instead of coming by car or plane reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 70 to 85%. Travelling alone in a car does not allow any savings by comparison with plane travel, whereas 2 people travelling by car save 20% of the greenhouse gas emissions, 3 together save 45% and 4 up to 60%.
Calculate the greenhouse gas emissions generated by your travel with MyClimate and save your emissions!

If you must come to Lausanne by car think of covoiturage!
Recycling
The World Gymnaestrada will supply recycling bins at all event sites and throughout Lausanne.
- Before then, why not begin to sort your rubbish? Separate paper, glass, aluminium and turn your food waste into compost.
Did you know it?
- On average, one person generates 2kg of rubbish every day.
Paper
- Only take the brochures you really need.
- Recycle brochures rather than throwing them in the bin.
- Print recto verso as far as possible.
- You can also use the reverse side of the paper you don’t need any more.
Did you know it?
- The use of recycled paper to replace virgin paper saves almost 40% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Alimentation
- Eat healthy food as far as you can, fresh products, in season and from local sources. This is your chance to promote “locally grown specialities”.
- Eat fruit and vegetables.
Did you know it?
- Local and seasonal food has a much smaller ecological footprint, due to its lower transport distances.
Water
- Think of turning off the water, when you are cleaning your teeth.
- Take showers rather than baths.
Did you know it?
Consuming tap water saves almost all of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by drinking bottled water.

Electricity
- Switch off the light, when it is not needed.
- When you next change a bulb, why not use an economical one?
- Don’t leave machines on standby for a long time.
Did you know it?
- The choice to use electricity produced from renewable energies causes an almost total reduction in the equivalent CO2 emitted by the use of conventional electricity.
