...to sustainable development!
Play the game and join us!
Help us turn this commitment into reality!
The World Gymnaestrada is the most important mass sports event in the world. Therefore it represents values to promote and also many challenges to be taken up…
The aim of this commitment: to make the WG-2011 an event that is concerned with sustainable development, and which fulfils the current requirements without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their own needs. Sustainable development is not only about the environment, but also about social and economic aspects.
The Organizing Committee of the World Gymnaestrada Lausanne 2011 is fully engaged with delivering an event as sustainable as possible. Environmental, Social and Economic aspects are tackled as follows:
Our environmental commitments
With over 20,000 participants expected, the World Gymnaestrada will be THE event in Lausanne during 2011. However, this event will also generate a significant impact on the environment, since Lausanne’s population with grow by 20%! Concretely, this means hundreds of tonnes of rubbish and various environmental problems. The WG-2011 commits to minimising the negative impact on the environment by a range of means:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Encouraging the use of public transport
- Encouraging soft mobility
- Limiting the volume of rubbish, and conducting recycling
- Consuming 100% renewable energy
- Communicating its efforts and informing participants about environmental consequences
- Encouraging the participants to act!
Transportation: Walking will be encouraged since the sites are at a reasonable walking distance (4 km perimeter among all sites). Lausanne, the “Green City”, is safe to walk around! A partnership with the Lausanne Public Transports has been set up to increase the offer during the event.
Waste: Recycling bins will be available in all sites. Re-usable plastic glasses will require a deposit (CHF 2.-) to encourage participants to return them instead of throwing them away (of course the CHF 2.- are given back when you return the plastic glass).
Energy: The event will use 100% renewable energy.
Communication: Recycled paper is used for all communication of this event.
Our social commitments
Such an event is the ideal moment to make its participants and the local population aware of its values:
- Perpetuate the World Gymnaestrada tradition and promote its intercultural values
- Promote and develop gymnastics and sport in general for everyone
- Highlight the values of integration and fair play
- Make the World Gymnaestrada accessible to the greatest number of people (integrate the local population into the event)
- Create a lasting positive heritage for all of the participants and for the region in general.
Integration: Several activities are planned during the WG-2011 for seniors as for young people.
Volunteering: The World Gymnaestrada is an event fundamentally run and delivered by volunteers. The Organizing Committee is composed of 80+ people from different backgrounds taking time outside their “normal” jobs to secure the best event possible. In addition, during the World Gymnaestrada, more than 5’000 volunteers will guarantee the operations of the event itself.
Our economic commitments
Balance: Every Sustainable Development initiative is carefully reviewed so that it takes into account the economic aspect and the impact on the budget is minimal.
Local Economy: The impact on the local economy will be significant and positive for Geneva Lake area. Every effort is being made to partner with local businesses.
To conclude, the Organizing Committee of the WG-2011 has adopted a Sustainable charter to carry out its daily activities. By the same token, every stakeholder (National Federations, Gymnasts, Lausanne Population, public authorities, sponsors, journalists, spectators) is encouraged to embrace the Sustainable Agenda.
Help us to make this idea of sustainable development a reality! On a daily basis, travel sensibly, eat healthily, sort your rubbish and switch the lights off after you…
From now on, you can support the WG-2011 by calculating your carbon footprint and committing to reduce it!
